Today, I had a bad day.
It shed light on how much I was letting work affect my normal life.
My normal life is full of work, I can't even have a proper social life.

Today, my fish died.
I bought the fish when I was with East West, with the intention of de-stressing and training myself in responsibility. It went well for many many months but the past few weeks were just insane. I'm not trying to use my work as an excuse for my fish's demise, but I am blaming myself for my incompetence at managing work-life balance.

Two months have passed in the blink of an eye and my stint as a SAFRA writer is over.

Gone are the days where I have to source for information, writing articles to entertain non-existent readers.

Gone are the days where I have to pore over 45 pages of forums to collate the number of entries to a contest.

Career-wise, being a writer was an interesting move. I got a chance to try something different from what I've learned in school and it was a good experience. It gave me the taste of the corporate environment, gave me the chance to meet a whole lot of great people, internally and externally, and gave me money to shop for 2 months. HAHA.

However, it's not the ideal position for me. I have a goal in mind and I plan to reach it with as little hitches as possible.

Now, I finally get to start learning. I've got a new job and I'm starting work next week!

Truth be told, this new job is going to be crap and is probably going to screw up my chances of getting a life. I know that it's going to be a grind-fest of long hours and non-existent weekends but I just can't help feeling excited about it. I can't help thinking that I'm actually mentally ill either. =P

The fact that many people have failed in this position previously sends little tingles down my spine. Tingles of excitement and anticipation.

The learning curve is going to be steep and hazardous and I am prepared to suck it up and absorb as much as possible.

This is a time to be focused and I hope that if I should lose my focus one day, I will look back at this post and drive myself forward again.

I have a theory that the iPhone impinges on social interaction and I am sure I will create some sort of an uproar with this proclamation. Firstly, I am a proud owner of an iPhone 3GS and I know loyalists of the iPhone will endorse or attest to the iPhone’s ability to allow them to be connected on social networking sites with just a tap of an application or being online in msn or other various chat programs all day long to chat with your friends wherever you are or whatever you are doing. Looking at that, one might argue that the iPhone has actually allowed us to remain “connected” with people.

My assertion in this is not to undermine the capabilities of the iPhone but to point out that the iPhone reduces or restricts the face-to-face interaction between people!

Walk out on the streets these days in Singapore and I am sure you can spot someone holding an iPhone in their hands either texting, meddling with some weird applications, waving it around like the whole world is oblivious to how you are embarrassing yourself or just simply staring at a video on it. I have seen primary school kids wielding it and even ah-peks (elderly men) who have to squint just to read the tiny text on their 3.5 inch widescreen multi-touch display.

In fact, some of you might even be reading this right now on your precious little touch-screen phone cum media player. Who? I mean YOU! You bespectacled little dweeb! Of course, I am jesting, you might not actually be bespectacled.

One might ask; if I was so opposed to the idea of the iPhone, why did I even get one? There were two simple reasons to that. I used to lug around a phone and an iPod, now I only need one gadget to satisfy my music and telecommunication needs. The second reason, of which I am not proud of, is that an iPhone used to be a chick magnet (come on! I’m sure some of you agree) of some sort, but the novelty and ‘cool factor’ of it has died off since primary school kids have started using it too.

Reading emails, monitoring stocks, getting updates on the latest new are all part of what the iPhone is about. Don’t you get annoyed when emails come through all the time and you feel an obligation to reply them because you have already read them? Do you find yourself constantly on your phone checking on the latest news? Do you whip out the iPhone in the lull between placing your orders and the dish actually arriving at the table at a restaurant? When everyone is talking about someone over dinner, do you immediately reach for your phone and log onto Facebook to check that person out? When you are having a conversation with someone, do you find yourself glancing at your phone instead of the person? Have you ever bumped into a pillar, tree or tripped over something just because you are too fixated on your iPhone instead of looking where you are walking?

If it all seems familiar to you, you are guilty of trespassing on the sacred grounds of human interaction. What happened to the days whereby you look someone in the face and have a real conversation with him/her without feeling the urge to check your email, Facebook or play a little ‘Paper Toss’ (a popular game application for the iPhone).

I remember sitting in a bar some weeks back just chilling out with my friends and there was a couple at a table near me. Throughout the course of the night, I only noticed them messing about on their individual iPhones, looking at pictures, playing apps and logging onto Facebook. Come on guys! That is just so sad! You should be making out or at least talking to each other! Please also note that showing each other your ‘Paper Toss’ scores does not account for human interaction! A television personnel once said, and I totally agree, that “an iPhone should be used for personal pleasure not displayed out in public especially on the dining table.”

Is that not enough proof that the iPhone is the devil in disguise? I therefore conclude that the iPhone is and will be an impingement on social interaction on a face-to-face basis. So keep your iPhones in your pockets, sleeves or bags and get back to basics! Start talking to the people around you and look at them while you are at it!

Life would have been easier if Apple remained as a fruit.

Well its already 2 months into 2010 and I figured its about time to reveal my resolutions for this year.

1) Find a job.
2) Lose weight.
3) Secret.

Resolution 1:
Firstly, let me say that I have not been very successful with regards to my job hunt.
DozenS of resumes sent and only four called back.
Went to two interviews, failed one and got offered one crappy one.
Its pretty depressing actually. I have the same routine everyday and the monotony of it is having a devastating effect on my morale.

Here's an example of what I do when I wake up.
1) Wake up.
2) Visit various job websites / look at newspaper.
3) Apply whatever is there to apply.
4) Walk out of room bump into mum.
5) Quarrel with mum about my incompetence in finding a job.
6) Go back room sulk for the day, watch movies maybe go out.
7) Sleep.
8) Go through steps 1 to 7 again.

WTF.

It drives me nuts just to even look at what I just typed, KC is a sad sad excuse of a man.

Resolution 2:
Well, this has been pretty successful. I am currently 3 kg lighter than when I first came back in end November. 1.5 kg per month may sound mediocre but its not bad considering that I have been bumming around!

I'll credit this to my new found discipline. I have been EXERCISING! Gym, swimming. (not a lot but definitely more than in Sydney)
I am also eating a lot less than in Sydney, no more monstrous portions of food because I'm no longer the head-chef here.
And, I must have sweat more in these 2 months than maybe a whole year in Sydney.

Not bad eh?

Resolution 3:
It will come when it comes.

*update* halfway through typing this post someone called to ask me for an interview but I'm pretty reluctant to go cos it seems like a f-up position. Why the f did I even go apply????

I've found a passion here in Sydney and its cooking.

Just meddling about with stuff throwing stuff into the pan and eventually eating the food you've created yourself is great.
The additional sense of satisfaction when someone else enjoys and appreciates the food just makes it even better.

This afternoon I whipped up something that took approximately 15 mins to cook and it was fantastic.

Chicken with bacon, olives, cherry tomatoes, french beans and basil topped off with a buttery wine sauce.

today i had a talk with damian while on a bus ride about this theory.

i'm supposed to be doing my last and final uni assignment due on monday right now but i just can't do it. there are too many things on my mind. stuff just floating around obstructing the flow of my thoughts.

there's the part whereby i just had my last day of uni and with the future staring at my in the face, i'm just like a deer caught in headlights. in shock.

the fact that i don't have any more classes for the rest of my life is still trying to sink in.

it feels like my head is full of cotton wool or maybe its that sinus infection i'm currently having.

end of crazy week.

my brain shut down for yesterday and today.
i had an insane week with 3 reports and 1 exam due this week.
thankfully an extension was given for the one due on friday so i finally got some rest.

i think i'm currently suffering from project hangover because i didn't sleep at all last night! i only had 2 hours of restless sleep from 8.30 am until 10.30 am.

i think i'm gonna be stoned tmr. but its time to start work for the exams and for the other assignment!

just received a fucked up email from a fucked up group mate in my management group.

Listen guys.. I will do my best and have the photos to you tonight.
I emailed a week ago about meeting up and obviously that hasnt happened but that is no-ones fault.
My slides are completed.
I will have a photo of me doing the wai.
At the end of the day, this is worth 10% of our mark, its not that big of a deal, and we dont need to go overboard.
Fun activities - do we even have time, there were already a lot of slides.

This guy refused to meet up, does not reply to smses and takes fucking ages to return emails.
He sent me four useless sildes and I had to change them for him.
Tomorrow's the fucking presentation and we've never even met up yet and I am fucking doing the whole powerpoint now.
If you don't care about your marks, please consider those who put in effort to do it. We fucking carried your fat ass for the last major presentation and now we have to do it again??

ARGH FUCKING PISSED OFF.

The other group mate hasn't even sent me the part yet! WTF.

I fucking hate my MGMT2102 group.

the relief

The pressure was mounting and the stress was overwhelming, the wait for the results is finally over. After a night of restlessness and nightmares of failure, the pressure of being unable to answer to my family and to myself has finally been eased.

I can't use words to explain the relief I felt this afternoon when I saw my results for this semester.

I am thankful.

AND

I will work hard next semester to prevent a repeat of what happened this semester.
No more puking, no more hair loss, no more nightmares, no more last minute red bulls.

To the people who have managed to graduate this semester, Yusheng in particular.

Congratulations, you deserved it!

The torturous months spent studying in Sydney are finally over. There is no more forsaking of relaxation time for reading powerpoint slides, writing stupid reports or watching whole movies in 5 minutes.

To that note, I believe you will end up missing some of the stuff we did. No more grocery shopping and menu-planning for the week, no more Australian's Next Top Model, no more movie screenings, no more Black Lion Supper Club (indomie!), no more hot lemon teas on cold winter nights, no more "best of 3" poker matches, mattress pushing, mini MMA fights, Sagat vs Ken, and many more.. haha.

That being said, good luck all the best. =)

something's wrong with me.
I've been studying the whole day but I can't absorb a single thing.
Now, its after 12 and all of a sudden I can understand the theories that I didn't understand just now.

True, its sure to help for my hellish Consumer Behaviour exam tmr but... it's just not right that I can only function at night.

Well, as you guys should know, the winter break's coming real soon.
This year's winter is from June 26th to July 20th and once again, my whole house is going home. The only difference this time is that Yusheng's not coming back from this holiday and.. Lim WX is no longer in Canberra. SIGH.

This means if I stayed here for the winter holidays, I would end up alone for most of the month, aka, I'll end up being KC the hermit and probably just stay at home and read books all day long.Click Here..

so.... I've decided to go back to Singapore =X on the 26th of June.
Oh yeah.. I know it has been too quick for anyone to miss me, and to be honest, I don't really miss anyone too haha =P I guess i'll just take this opportunity to start clearing stuff and prepare for the massive clear-out in my final semester.

OK. Enough of blabbering, I'm supposed to be hard at work. Obviously I'm not. SIGH.

"I'm a novelist. My work is human nature. Real life is all I know. Don't ever confuse the two, your life and your work. You will walk out of here this afternoon with only one thing that no one else has. There will be hundreds of people out there with your same degree: there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But you will be the only person alive who has sole custody of your life. Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk, or your life on a bus, or in a car, or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart. Not just your bank accounts but also your soul.

People don't talk about the soul very much anymore. It's so much easier to write a resume than to craft a spirit. But a resume is cold comfort on a winter's night, or when you're sad, or broke, or lonely, or when you've received your test results and they're not so good.

I'm down with bronchitis again.. whats that? its a sort of wheezing cough caused by inflammation to lungs..
the last time i had it in singapore, it lastes for 1.5 months.. >.<

anyway now i know why it lasts so long..

I've been eating antihistamines to control my allergies daily...

apparently..

An effect of antihistamines is to thicken mucus secretions. Expelling infected mucus via coughing can be beneficial in recovering from bronchitis. Expulsion of the mucus may be hindered if it is thickened. Antihistamines can help bacteria to persist[citation needed] and multiply in the lungs by increasing its residence time in a warm, moist environment of thickened mucus.
Using antihistamines along with an expectorant cough syrup may be doubly harmful encouraging the production of mucus and then thickening that which is produced. Using an expectorant cough syrup alone might be useful in flushing bacteria from the lungs. Using an antihistamine along with it works against the intention of using the expectorant.

I've been secretly playing soccer here in Sydney although I'm banned from it for life! (due to my knee injury) >.<
Its a massive risk cos I sort of felt my knee a little in today's session but.. I'll just be more careful the next session =P
